Simon Cowell quits American Idol

Simon Cowell confirms that he is leaving American Idol after this year's season.

SimoThe music mogul has quit the show after nine seasons in order to launch a US version of The X Factor in 2011.

Appearing at the Fox execs session at the TCA press tour today, Cowell confirmed that he would serve as judge and executive producer on the new series.

Cowell told reporters that it would have been "impossible" for him to continue on Idol alongside The X Factor. He also serves as a judge on the original UK version of The X Factor as well as Britain's Got Talent.

On his potential replacements on Idol, Cowell commented: "I've had the best eight or nine years of my life doing this job. The most important thing is [for Fox] to get someone who knows what they're talking about. I want to leave Idol this year bigger and better than ever before. I hope it'll be higher-rated than it was last year."

X Factor draws in 19 Million Viewers

ITV1's The X Factor was watched by more than 19 million people as Olly Murs and Joe McElderry fought for the title, according to the latest figures.

An average of 15.5m people tuned in to watch the full two-hour final on Sunday night.

But a peak audience of 19.1m, between 2115 and 2120 GMT, saw McElderry declared the overall victor.

The show accounted for 56% of the total TV audience.

Citing a reliable show source, the newspaper claims that Minogue has decided to leave the show in order to move back to Australia and start a family with her boyfriend, rugby player Kris Smith.

Stacey Solomon has finished in third place on this year's series of The X Factor.

Solomon, who performed 'Who Wants To Live Forever', 'Wonderful World' and 'Feeling Good' on tonight's show, received the fewest amount of public votes and will not take part in tomorrow's final.
